Night twelve of #SommsDrinkingTheQuarantine
. For those just joining me, this is something I started a few nights ago, an effort to continue tasting and talking about wine during the unusual times we all find ourselves in.
Tonight we are going to talk about Brazil. This is surely not the first country that comes to mind when one thinks of wine. Even within South America, Brazil's reputation remains a distance behind not just Argentina and Chile, but Uruguay too. For most, Brazil remains better known for caipirinhas and cold beer than it does #wine
This is to be expected when one considers that the majority of the country is simply too warm to grow wine grapes. Yet Brazil's wine industry has a long history, beginning with early Portuguese settlers who planted vines near what is now São Paulo in 1532. Jesuit priests brought vines from Spain a century later, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that a wine industry formed in southern #Brazil
. Based in the rainy mountains of Serra Gaúcha, few wine grapes did well so hybrids and American varieties were planted. For countless decades most Brazilian wines were made in a light bodied, fizzy, slightly sweet style. Many tasted terrible. This continued until 1990 when Brazil opened its wine market and consumers realized that imports offered dramatically better quality and value.
This spurred change in the industry, at least on a small scale. Vineyards have pushed further south and emerging regions near the Uruguayan border seem promising. Still, even today, less than 10% of production is considered fine wine. #Sparkling
wines show some potential. This traditional method one from Miolo is broad and quite rich with a seemingly generous dosage framing flavors of pound cake and citrus peel.
