“Let me not then die ingloriously and without a struggle, but let me first do some great thing that shall be told among men hereafter.” - Achilles, The Iliad - - -
One of the oldest stories in Western culture about the war, struggle, emotion, and mortality. Achilles, a glorious hero who has inspired many people, including Alexander The Great (who likened himself to a modern Achilles in his own time), to strive for their best and to seek success no matter the cost. But Achilles name also has another connotation in our culture, the Achilles Heel, the weak point of an individual. Achilles heel was his one physical weakness that allowed Paris of Troy to kill the Mighty tyrant-Hero of Greece, however, Achilles recognized that his own hubris and desire for fame would bring him down in truth.
It was prophesied to Achilles that he would have a choice, to die a Hero at a young age with absolute infamy throughout the ages, or to avoid war and live to be an old man, forever lost in the History of the world beyond those who knew him. He made his choice, and suffered greatly at the loss of his deepest love, Patroclus, and never saw his Son grow up. - -
We all have choices to make. Some give us fame, glory, or a superficial sense of satisfaction. But, as through the eyes of the reader in the story of the Battle of Troy, will these superficial and outward successes translate into personal growth and happiness? Achilles arguably never left the archetypal Tyrant stage of his emotional development. To fully actualize ourselves, we must be concerned with the health of others and the wealth of relationships we foster. -
Take care you make the choices you think will bring you the greatest version of yourself. Always. - -
