I pull off the road and turn off the headlights, the world disappears.
Grab the camera, lock the doors, start walking. As my old eyes slowly adjust to the light of the full moon the scene becomes familiar.
The night is cold, silent and still.
Most everywhere I go I am greeted by coyotes: yipping at the moon, celebrating a kill, watching from a nearby tree line, I find their presents oddly comforting as I wonder alone in the dark. I know the night belongs to them.
No coyotes here.
I stand my tripod in the middle of the road and size up the shot.
Voices… There is no one for miles in any direction, yet tiny distant voices from years away are right behind me.
Goosebumps as I release the shutter. Thunk! Old #7
opens its eye to the frigid winter night.
Footsteps on the frozen gravel road… I can see forever in the moonlight now, there is not a living soul in sight. Time stops…
Standing alone on this infamous road, I know well where I am.
Thunk! The mirror falls as a bitter chill passes through my body, uneasy silence giving mute testament to the sorrow this place has seen.
Is it all in my head? Does it matter if it is?
This is Midnight at Ludlow Station.
