/30: A little (4 x 6 inch) landscape, delicately executed in monochrome watercolour washes, attributed to John Crome (1768-1821), location unknown - any ideas anyone?!
I bought this years ago very cheaply on EBay with every chance of it being wrong - Crome is a tricky artist to pin down as he rarely signed & was much emulated in style by his immediate circle & later followers. Indeed, the ‘signature’ & date here are almost certainly by another hand.
Nevertheless, as time has gone by, my feeling, & that of others I’ve shown (including the Norwich Castle Museum), is that is has a very good chance of being ‘right’ & thus it’s a keeper.
Crome was a founder of the Norwich School, the first provincial art movement in Britain, for which I’ve always had an affection, & is an important artist in the history of British landscape painting - hopefully his bicentenary next year will be fittingly acknowledged.
